Resource Management Services Branch
Cataloging & Metadata Services
Cataloging & Metadata Services Branch is a part of the Resource Management Services Branch and is responsible for cataloging, classifying, and processing materials in the State Library of North Carolina’s collection. Additionally, we share our local catalog with and provide cataloging services for several state agency libraries, including the Legislative Library, N.C. Museum of Art Library, Department of Labor Library, Department of Transportation Library, and Executive Mansion Library.
We are members of LYRASIS and OCLC and use OCLC’s Connexion software to contribute records to WorldCat. We use Voyager for our local catalog. Please contact the Acquisitions and Library Systems Branch for further information about the Voyager system.
We help establish standards and guidelines for metadata for electronic collections at the State Library in collaboration with the Digital Information Management Program. We use OCLC’s CONTENTdm as the platform for our online collections.
The Cataloging & Metadata Services Branch also functions as the agent for the North Carolina Online Union List of Serials.
Grigg Classification Scheme
In 1963 Dorothy C. Grigg, at that time Head of the Cataloging Branch, devised a special classification scheme for genealogical source materials which needed to be arranged by place. Called the Grigg Genealogical Classification Scheme, it has since received much attention for its ease of use, even for patrons visiting the library for the first time.
Cataloging Advice
The Cataloging and Metadata Services Branch may be able to provide limited help and advice to other North Carolina libraries about cataloging matters via email or telephone.
