1980 Detailed Occupation by Race and Sex for the Civilian Labor Force
In 1983 the US Bureau of the Census released the 1980 Equal Opportunity (EEO) Special File for North Carolina. The file was produced to help meet the needs of both government and private industry in planning for EEO/Affirmative Action. The original file contained 503 occupational categories by race, sex, and Spanish origin for all persons in the experienced civilian labor force as of April 1, 1980. The file is the 1980 Census counterpart to the 1970 Census file popularly known as the "ORC tapes". The 503 occupational categories in the file were collapsed to far fewer categories for this report.
Census figures on the number of experienced workers by occupation have generally been accepted as estimates for the number of workers who are "skilled."
The data are based on the 1980 Census sample. The occupational categories are tabulated for "recently-experienced" civilians 16 years and older, that is, those persons employed at the time of the census or those unemployed who had civilian work experience between 1975 and 1980. Persons are classified as unemployed with no civilian work experience since 1975 if they reported themselves as unemployed at the time of the 1980 Census and one of the following: (1) their last job since 1975 was in the Armed Forces; or (2) they last worked in 1974 or earlier; or (3) they reported that they had never worked.
The file contains a count of those persons unemployed with no civilian work experience since 1975 as a separate category. This information is now shown in these reports.
The original file also includes tabulations on "years of school completed" by occupation. This information is now shown in these reports.
