Income is total money income received in calendar year 1979. Family income is the sum of money income for all family members in the household.

Poverty status of families in 1979 - Families are classified as above or below the poverty level by comparing their total 1979 income to an income cutoff or "poverty threshold." The income cutoffs vary by family size, number of children, and age of the family householder. For example, the poverty threshold in 1979 for a family of four with two related children under age 18 was $7,356. The complete threshold table is presented below.
