We create information products and provide services to the library community in North Carolina.

Government DocumentsNorth Carolina Publications

The State Publications Clearinghouse manages the North Carolina depository system. The Clearinghouse was created by GS 125-11 in 1987 in order to facilitate access to state publications by the people of North Carolina and currently has 22 member libraries.

The State Publications Collection is a digital repository that was created to provide stable, permanent access to digital state publications. This collection went live in early summer 2008 and contains a mix of digitized historic publications and current digital publications.

The print collection of NC state publications spans more than 200 years and provides a window into the history of North Carolina state government. This collection is the permanent, official depository of state publications and contains more than 250,000 items. Most items can be loaned through your local library's ILL program or may be used in-house.

The Documents Cataloger creates original cataloging records for all state publications (in print, digital and fiche formats) sent through the depository system. Depository libraries, or any library that uses OCLC, can choose to add our records to their library catalog.

The Checklist of Official North Carolina State Publications is published on a monthly basis and is available through the digital State Publications Collection.

The Classification Scheme for North Carolina State Publications was created by Sangster Parrott, Documents Librarian, in the 1960’s and organizes NC government publications by issuing agency. The Documents Cataloger maintains and updates the scheme to reflect agency changes.

Federal Publications

The Federal Depository Library Program is administered by this branch. The State Library has been a member of the depository system since early in the 20th century. The collection consists of more than 500,000 items in a variety of formats including print, fiche and electronic.
