QUALIFICATIONS: |
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Familiarity with professional library and information science, archival, and/or records management principles, methods, and practices, particularly as they relate to the preservation and access of digital information; an understanding of cataloging rules and metadata; a strong desire to innovate; strong project management skills and a demonstrated collaborative ability. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in library and information science or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited (ALA) institutions or regionally accredited programs in North Carolina. |
DUTIES: |
The State Library of North Carolina is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and outgoing Project Manager to serve as an integral member of the Digital Information Management Program (DIMP). The position will work closely with staff from the Government Documents Branch, the Metadata and Cataloging Branch, and the DIMP to manage the State Library’s role as one of three partners in the two-year NC ECHO grant, “Ensuring Democracy through Digitization.” Responsibilities include identifying and locating historic government publications in the State Library stacks, preparing materials for shipping to UNC-Chapel Hill for digitization, organizing shipments, managing quality control, enhancing metadata records, and liaising with staff from UNC-Chapel Hill and the project lead, East Carolina University. The highly organized candidate will centrally track which of the approximately 2,500 volumes are scanned from each of the three grant partner institutions. Some HTML work may be required and experience working with Access databases would be a plus. This is a one-year, eleven month appointment and may be renewed in the second year of the grant for up to six months. The position is located at the State Library in Raleigh, NC. |

The State Library of North Carolina is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and outgoing Digitization Specialist to serve as an integral member of the Digital Information Management Program (DIMP) team. The DIMP identifies and promotes solutions to ensure preservation and permanent public access to digital information produced by North Carolina state government.
This position will be responsible for the day-to-day scanning and metadata description of in-house state publications materials and related North Caroliniana. Responsibilities include organizing materials and processing them for digital reformatting, scanning materials based on established guidelines, conducting quality control on digital files, creating metadata and other descriptive information, and uploading digital files into CONTENTdm for public access. Some HTML editing may be required, as well. The position is located at the State Library in Raleigh, NC. |

Broad knowledge of professional library and information science, archival, and/or records management principles, methods, and practices, particularly as they relate to the preservation and access of digital information; a strong desire to innovate; strong project management skills and a demonstrated collaborative ability; knowledge of metadata standards (MARC/Dublin Core/METS) used in libraries and government agencies for identifying and retrieving information; and familiarity with NC state government structure and organization. Knowledge of XML/XSLT, database design and management, and experience programming in web languages such as Javascript and PHP is expected. Experience with digital asset management systems, such as CONTENTdm, ability to develop scripts to establish more efficient work models, and some network administration is preferred. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.

This position is at the Journey level of the Librarian Professional career band. Salary and level will be determined commensurate with competencies. The State Library of North Carolina seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, and outgoing Systems Integration Librarian to serve as an integral member of the Digital Information Management Program (DIMP) team. The DIMP works to ensure preservation and permanent public access to digital information produced by North Carolina state government. This position explores, adapts, and implements emerging technologies in support of the Library’s digital collections and preservation initiatives. Using a combination of XML, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL, and PHP (or additional programming languages), this position manages the Library’s hosted instance of CONTENTdm and affiliated websites, and will investigate, develop, and incorporate Web 2.0 applications, such as RSS feeds and improved search mechanisms to support specialized digitization and digital preservation projects. Additionally, the position is responsible for file and directory management on a hosted server system, including data loads to and from local servers, and acts as the liaison between OCLC technologists and the Library. The position manages web statistics and related data analysis tools and metadata ingest and sharing in a variety of formats (including Dublin Core, METS, OAI, and MARC-based XML).
