- We can borrow from thousands of library collections nationwide for your work-related needs
- You can request books or photocopies of articles from published journals.
- Other libraries may charge a fee for borrowing or photocopying, but we always look for a free supplier first. If we can’t find one, we’ll call and let you know.
- Books can be picked up at our library, or we’ll arrange to get it to you.
- Photocopies are scanned and sent to your email as pdf files.
- Items may be requested via the Interlibrary Loan Request Form, or call our Reference Desk (919-807-7450) and ask for Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan to Other Libraries
State Library of North Carolina collections:
- Most general collection titles circulate and are available through interlibrary loan.
- Newspapers on microfilm circulate to libraries across the United States and Canada. Borrowers may request up to six reels per request and have simultaneous requests.
- Genealogical Microfilm Collections circulate to North Carolina libraries only. Additional information about these collections is below.
- Print genealogy collection does not circulate. Limited photocopying is available. Contact Genealogical Services for details.
Genealogical Microfilm Collections:
CORE COLLECTION OF NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY RECORDS
- This collection of primarily pre-1868 North Carolina county records includes wills, deeds, marriages, court minutes, tax lists, etc. Records available vary from county to county.
- Also available: Estates Records microfilm. The extensive body of original North Carolina county records referred to as "Estates Papers" or "Estates Records” contain the various surviving unbound documents which were generated in settling the estate of a deceased individual. These records are filed first by county and then alphabetically by name of the deceased and date of probate.
NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS, 1800-1930
- Microfilm of North Carolina federal population census schedules for 1800 through 1930, and the 1930 Soundex index for the state, are available for loan to North Carolina libraries only. The State Library does not lend census microfilm for other states. Libraries and customers can rent microfilm from the National Archives Microfilm Rental Program.

- 1850 and 1860 North Carolina federal census slave schedules
- 1850-1880 North Carolina federal census mortality schedules
- 1850-1880 North Carolina federal agricultural, industrial, and social statistics schedules. (These schedules do not survive for later years.)
- Census Descriptions of Geographic Subdivisions and Enumeration Districts, 1930: North Carolina (describing the boundaries of particular enumeration district but do not indicate all of its streets)
- Enumeration District maps for the Fifteenth Census of the United States, 1930: North Carolina (contemporary maps on which the Bureau of the Census overlaid the boundaries and numbers of the enumeration districts.
