Collection
The State Library of North Carolina maintains a collection of videocassettes and DVDs designed to support the departments and programs of state government. Many videos are suitable for public programming and continuing education. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of business, human resource development, and safety training. They may not be shown where admission is charged. For holdings, please consult the online catalog. Contact the Reference Staff at 919-807-7450 for assistance with searching the online catalog.
State agency employees are encouraged to contact the Reference Staff at 919-807-7450 to recommend worked related video titles for purchase. All video recommendations are reviewed by the Government & Heritage Library's Collection Management Committee.
Borrowing
State government agencies or employees with library cards may borrow videos directly from the State Library's Government & Heritage Library. Please call Video Services at 919-807-7470 to reserve videos. Videos may be borrowed for a maximum of ten days but may be renewed by calling Video Services. If you are a state employee and do not have a State Library of North Carolina library card, please contact the reference desk at 919-807-7450 for registration information.
All other individuals will need to request videos through interlibrary loan from their local public library. Libraries in North Carolina are asked to contact Video Services directly to borrow videos instead of going through other interlibrary loan channels.
Lost or damaged items
Notify the library immediately if the item is lost or damaged. Users who have lost titles, have rendered them unusable, or do not return videos within 30 days of the due date will be charged the cost of replacement. Checks should be made out to the State Library of North Carolina.
Special Notice: 2008-2010
The State Library of North Carolina will withdraw children's videos from the collection beginning in February 2009. The library will accept bookings for children's videos through January 31, 2009 for videos to be circulated through June 2009. No children's videos will be booked or circulated beyond June 30, 2009.
Withdrawn videos will be boxed by subject, content or producer (i.e. fairy tales, fables, animals, Disney). Each box will be offered to North Carolina public libraries on a first come first serve basis. A list of video boxes available will be posted on NCKids, NCPLDA and NCLA listservs. Because of limited funds at this time, we will not be able to mail or deliver the video boxes to you. Libraries will be responsible for pick-up of any video boxes selected. Requests for boxes will not be taken prior to February 2010.
