New! Search Across GHL Resources with “Search Everything”

Monday, July 22, 2019

Have you ever wished you could search across all of the Government and Heritage Library’s resources using a single search box—like you can with Google—rather than having to search our catalog or online databases separately? You are now in luck! The library has recently implemented a new “Search Everything” option—a single search box you can use to search for materials contained in our traditional library catalog as well as online journal articles and e-books. This combines the content from our traditional catalog with journal articles from many of our subscription databases. You no longer have to search the online catalog and each individual database separately—you can search them all at one time!

Summon Search Box Summon

Search Everything is made possible by Summon, which is available to us through NC LIVE. The Summon service is a discovery service based on a unified index of content. It brings together everything contained in our library catalog (books, journals, government documents, microfilm, videos, etc.) and combines it with online articles that we have access to through our subscription databases, as well as e-books from NC LIVE. In addition, the State Library’s research guides are also indexed in Summon, and all of these resources can now be searched in one place.

Experiment with the Search Options

You can narrow your search results by using filters and facets, which appear under “Refine Your Search” in the left-hand column of the search results page. You can also easily save items from your search results with options to email or print, export citations to bibliographic management software, or format citations for fast, easy cut-and-paste. An advanced search feature is also available in Search Everything, for those who want more search options beyond the simple search box.

E-Journal Portal

In addition to our new Search Everything tool, we also have an E-Journal portal. If you are looking for a specific online journal, the new portal lets you search by title for journals available in our subscription databases. You can also use the portal to search our e-books by title.

What’s Not Included

Search Everything indexes cover-to-cover, full-text databases. This means that there are still some databases that are not included in the Search Everything search results. For us, that primarily includes genealogy resources such as Ancestry, Fold3, and HeritageQuest. You can still search those resources directly from our Online Resources page. We are also planning to include our digital collections in the Search Everything index, but they have not yet been added. Stay tuned, and we’ll let you know when they are available.

We encourage you to give Search Everything a try and let us know what you think!
