Background and Experience

Taylor joined the Government and Heritage Library (GHL) this past August after moving to Raleigh from Roanoke, Virginia. North Carolina is the fifth U.S. state she is proud to call home! Taylor graduated from Roanoke College in May 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and minor in Secondary Education. While an undergraduate student, she had the opportunity to work as a Student Assistant for both the Roanoke College History Department and Roanoke College Archives, which eventually piqued her interest in working in libraries for her future career. Taylor has a natural love for conducting research and digging into source material, as can be exemplified by her thoroughness in her projects and research endeavors.

As an undergraduate student at Roanoke College, Taylor had the opportunity to conduct a variety of independent research projects. Her research interests include women’s history, American history, and early 20th-century history. A holder of a Teaching License in Secondary History and Social Sciences from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Taylor also comes to the GHL not only with a solid background in conducting independent research, but also with experience working in multiple public school systems in the Roanoke area, where she interacted with a variety of students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Taylor is passionate about sharing history with others and educating them on effective research strategies. She hopes to pursue a Master’s degree in Library Science in the near future.

Reference Service Assistant

As a Reference Service Assistant at the GHL, Taylor will provide research assistance and guidance to patrons who visit the library in person or make inquiries via phone or e-mail. You may also see her regularly at the reference desk in the GHL Reading Room, where she greets patrons with a smile and is always ready for the challenge of a good reference question! Taylor also assists patrons through the “Chat with a Librarian” service.

Additionally, Taylor processes all borrowing and lending Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests received by the State Library of North Carolina. To learn more about this wonderful, free service to patrons started by Alexandre Vattemare in the 19th century that still carries on today, check out last month’s GHL blog post about the history of Interlibrary Loan here: https://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/blog/2019/09/30/alexander-vattemare-father-interlibrary-loan. If there is ever a resource you are in need of that is not held by our library that you would like to pick up at the GHL, consider making an Interlibrary Loan request through our library with the following form: https://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/ghl/services/ill
