Suggest a Title to Purchase

Monday, November 25, 2019

The Government and Heritage Library (GHL) strives to be the principal library for North Carolina state government, serve state employees, researchers, and the general public and be your go-to source for everything North Carolina. We have extensive resources about North Carolina, and we want to continue to expand our collections to support and enhance the research needs and interests of North Carolina’s diverse communities.

To accomplish this goal, patron input is crucial in developing our collections. If you are looking for something we do not currently own, and it meets our Collection Development Guidelines, we may be able to purchase it to add it to our collection.

Items in scope

The Collections Management team is currently interested in titles that reflect:

  • a complete and well-balanced picture of North Carolina- its people, history, and growth; its relationship to the region and the country as a whole; its government and institutions; and its arts and culture.
  • ideas, information, stories, and experiences that document the many facets and dimensions of diversity in North Carolina.
  • perspectives from diminished or entirely lost voices of historically oppressed, marginalized, underrepresented or underserved populations and communities of North Carolina.

While these topics are of particular interest to the team, GHL accepts a wide variety of suggestions for titles to purchase.

Have you checked our catalog for the title?

Before making a suggestion of a title to purchase, please check our catalog to verify that the Library does not already own the title.

Is the title available for purchase?

Also, check that the title can be purchased. Information about a title and its availability from retailers, such as Amazon.com, help determine if your suggestion is available for purchase.

How do I suggest titles for purchase?

Once you complete these checks, if you would like to suggest a book for purchase, please complete the Purchase Request Form located on the Support Our Collection page of our website.  We welcome suggestions for purchase. However, please note that the evaluation, selection, purchasing, and ingest into our collections may take some time. Items that are purchased will not be available to place on hold or check out to the public until fully cataloged. If you need a title quickly, please consider interlibrary loan as an option.

Will you automatically buy my suggested purchase?

The Government and Heritage Library strives to make our collection as responsive as possible to our researcher’s needs and we consider each suggestion carefully. We are unable to purchase every title that is suggested. The decision to purchase an item is based on the Library's selection criteria, current budget constraints, and the item's availability.

I recently wrote a book. How can I suggest the library purchase my book?

The best way for us to consider your book for our collections, is to submit a Purchase Request Form or contact the Library directly with basic bibliographic information about your book (title, author, ISBN, publisher, date of publication, number of pages, price), a brief description of your book and its intended audience, and information about how or where to buy it.

What if I wanted to donate a book?

The Government and Heritage Library does welcome donations that further the mission of the library and fit within the scope of our Collection Development Guidelines. The library accepts materials with the understanding that acceptance of a donation does not guarantee inclusion into the collection. The library retains unconditional ownership of all donations and makes the final decisions on acceptance, use, and/or disposition. More information on donations can be found on our Support Our Collections webpage.
