Learn How to Start Your Personal Digital Archive

Monday, March 2, 2020

Feeling overwhelmed by your digital content? Don’t know where to start to preserve and archive your digital items? Join us at the North Carolina Government and Heritage Library (GHL) for an ongoing series of workshops to learn specific tips and tricks for getting started in creating a Personal Digital Archive.Krista Sorenson, GHL Digital Projects Librarian, leads a Personal Digital Archiving Workshop

What is Personal Digital Archiving?

The GHL defines Personal Digital Archiving, or PDA, as “the active maintenance of your digital life including preservation, management, and access.” This includes a series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as they are needed. These digital materials may be digitized versions of physical resources (such as books, photographs, and maps) or materials that have always existed digitally (databases, websites, online reports).

Activities in Personal Digital Archiving include:

  • Identify & Select -- understanding your digital life, identifying file format types, creating a digital plan/inventory, and prioritizing what you want in a personal digital archive.
  • Store & Protect – exporting data, conducting file naming and file organization, understanding storage options, and considering best practices for long-term preservation.
  • Manage & Provide -- Managing access to your content and copies, reviewing and maintaining your archive, active password management, and planning for the unexpected.

Join Us for the Next Session!
