Get #VoteReady: National Voter Registration Day

Monday, September 21, 2020

Election Day 2020 is right around the corner. On September 22, 2020, the State Library of North Carolina will join over fifty library locations across the state in celebrating National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), a nonpartisan civic holiday and cross-country effort to assist voters in registering to vote. Communities across North Carolina and the country are planning to celebrate National Voter Registration Day and increase voter participation.  Thousands of national, state and local organizations and volunteers have pledged to participate by coordinating hundreds of events, on and offline, nationwide to drive attention towards voter registration.

Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote.

National Voter Registration Day was first observed in 2012 and has been growing in popularity every year since. This annual event is held on the fourth Tuesday of September.

National Voter Registration Day NC Community Partners

Libraries are centers of civic engagement in communities, schools, and academic institutions. By providing information, resources, and programming to foster full participation in the democratic process, libraries are valuable partners to government agencies, community leaders, and elected officials. Ensuring that eligible voters are registered and ready for the election is an important part of that engagement and, with voter registration rates lower than usual due to the pandemic, libraries respond to that call with a renewed sense of urgency.

The State Library of North Carolina is a community partner for National Voter Registration Day. Leading up to this year’s NVRD, the State Library has hosted online informational sessions and presentations for North Carolina libraries that are interested in becoming an NVRD partner. The State Library has also developed an online toolkit for National Voter Registration Day. The toolkit includes additional information and resources for NVRD, how to host a voter registration drive, how register to vote, and North Carolina Voting Resources.

The deadline to register to vote for the 2020 Election in the state of North Carolina is October 9, 2020. Below you can find links to voter registration and election resources including websites for students and nonpartisan fact-checking. Make sure you are #VoteReady!
