Collection Builder: A New Way to Browse Our Digital Collections

Monday, October 12, 2020

The North Carolina Digital Collections contain over 90,000 historic and recent photographs, state government publications, manuscripts, and other resources on topics related to North Carolina. The Collections are free and full-text searchable and bring together content from the State Archives of North Carolina (SANC) and the State Library of North Carolina (SLNC).

However, it can sometimes be hard to find resources related to a large topic when the items span multiple collections. SANC and SLNC have partnered with the University of Idaho to pilot a new software called Collection Builder. Collection Builder highlights items in the Collections related to “She Changed the World.”

She Changed the World

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. Despite decades of marches, petitions, and passage of the 19th Amendment, it did not grant voting rights for all. The ongoing fight for equity continues today.

She Changed the World: NC Women Breaking Barriers,” an initiative by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, celebrates the achievements of North Carolina women and explores the diversity of their experiences and impact on our history.

What makes the CollectionBuilder site different from the Digital Collection site? The Collection Builder site pulls together previously digitized state publications, photographs, letters, oral histories, posters, and other materials available online specifically related to the She Changed the World initiative. It serves as a landing page for this collection that was carefully curated by SANC and SLNC.

Technical Details

This digital collection is built with CollectionBuilder, an open-source tool for creating digital collection and exhibit websites that are developed by faculty librarians at the University of Idaho Library following the Lib-STATIC methodology. This site is built using CollectionBuilder-CDM which utilizes CONTENTdm APIs to create an engaging “skin” on top of an existing digital collection repository.
