Conference Scholarships

The State Library will be offering scholarships to several conferences over the next year to help NC library staff attend and participate in these professional development events. Scholarship details will vary depending so please read the application details carefully.

Internet Librarian 2018

Applications must describe why this person would benefit from attending the conference, why you chose to nominate this person, and how the library will benefit from having a staff member attend.  Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a conference scholarship from the State Library. People who should attend this conference are:

  • interested in learning new ways to manage and integrate digital content and information
  • looking for both inspiration and instruction in a hands-on, collaborative environment.
  • seeking to learn about how to use the web and innovative technologies to provide more dynamic library servi

The scholarship will reimburse up to $3,000 for these allowable costs: conference registration (no pre-conference), lodging (10/15 - 10/18), and travel costs (flight, taxi, etc).  Meals and other incidentals are not eligible for reimbursement.  This scholarship is reimbursable through the awarded library; Awardees will submit a reimbursement request including receipts and a narrative report via email shortly after the conference.

Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, July 18. Awards will be announced by the end of the business day on Friday, July 20. If chosen, all scholarship recipients must agree to attend the entire conference.

Young Adult Library Services Association Symposium

Dates: November 2-4, 2018
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
About: Programs will cover the entire spectrum of topics related to providing services for and with young adults.  At this symposium we will explore how libraries can best support teens’ social and emotional learning to help them effectively navigate a challenging world.Session content is focused around key issues in YALSA's recent report.

Seven scholarships will be awarded at $1,400 each. This is a reimbursable program. Eligible expenses include: 1) airfare 2) hotel room for three nights 3) conference registration fees, not including pre-conferences, and 4) ground transportation.

Please submit applications by 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Scholarship recipients will be notified no later than August 1, 2018. Applications will be judged by the attached rubric. First-time attendees who apply will be given priority over other applicants. You must have your Library Director’s approval to apply.

Scholarship awardees are expected to share their experiences by writing a 200-300 word narrative after the conference to send to the State Library, as well as provide feedback on the usefulness of attending the conference. Final narrative and reimbursements are due by January 15, 2019.

Dates: March 26-28, 2019
Location: Arlington, Virginia
About: Discover the insights, strategies and practices that allow us to push the envelope in expanding the net, managing libraries and digital information, and enhancing the information sharing and learning experience of people in our communities.At Computers in Libraries, you'll hear from excellent and innovative libraries, network and learn from leaders in the field, and definitely be an active participant.

The scholarship application will open on September 13, 2018 and be announced on the LD Blog and State Library Listservs.

Evergreen 2019

Dates: April 24-27, 2019
Location: Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
About: The Evergreen International Conference is held annually, usually in the spring, at a different location each year. The conference draws Evergreen users, developers, advocates, vendors, and others interested in Evergreen or open source. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The scholarship application will open on October 12, 2018 and be announced on the NC Cardinal Listservs.

American Library Association Conference 2019

Dates: June 20-25, 2019
Location: Washington, D.C.
About: The annual conference for the American Library Association. Program proposals are currently being accepted Once again, proposals will be accepted through August 31, 2018 12:00 Midnight (CST). Please use this submission site.

The scholarship application will open on December 8, 2018 and be announced on the LD Blog and State Library Listservs.
