Department Head, Access Services - NC State University Libraries


The Department Head, Access Services provides leadership and management for the Access Services department across library locations. They develop proactive services with an emphasis on the integration of emerging technologies for improved access. The incumbent directs and coordinates the activities of the department comprising 3 librarians, 20 support staff, and a significant number of student assistants. The Department Head sets departmental goals and objectives, analyzes and acts on library usage trends, designs workflows, and maintains internal controls and documentation. They recommend policies and establish procedures to support the university community and its changing needs in an effective and accountable manner. The Department Head works in close cooperation with other public services managers and staff to meet service expectations and with Building Services staff to ensure a smoothly running 24-hour facility. As a department head, they participate in library planning and serve on Management Council and other library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS, MIS, or equivalent advanced degree. Relevant professional experience, including management/supervision. Demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate technical projects and personnel involving both internal and external collaborators. Ability to provide leadership for the delivery of excellent customer service to a diverse clientele. Commitment to fostering an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Understanding of the mission of a research university and of the changing educational environment. Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution to the library profession.
