About this Event

PBS North Carolina, together with RiverRun International Film Festival and State Library North Carolina, proudly present an Indie Lens Pop-up Preview Screening and Discussion — Philly D.A.

About the film: In this upcoming special eight-part docuseries from the acclaimed PBS documentary anthology series, Independent Lens, Philly D.A., filmmakers Ted Passon and Yoni Brook bring you an incredible inside look at the criminal justice system and one man's journey to transform it. In 2017, Philadelphia had one of the highest incarceration rates of any major city in the United States. And it’s become the epicenter of a historic experiment that could shape the future of prosecution in America for decades to come. When civil rights attorney Larry Krasner mounted a longshot campaign to become District Attorney—and won—he pledged to end mass incarceration by changing the culture of the criminal justice system from within. With unprecedented access to Krasner’s office, Philly D.A. explores the most pressing social issues of our time—police brutality, the opioid crisis, gun violence, and mass incarceration—through the lens of one man attempting fundamental overhaul from within the system.

Following the preview screening of the first hour of the eight-part series, stay with us for a powerful and important conversation hosted by Deborah Holt Noel, senior producer/host of Black Issues Forum and North Carolina Weekend. Deborah will discuss the criminal legal system, prosecutorial reform, prisoners' rights, and current events will local attorneys, community advocates, and law professors. Engagement is encouraged and you will be able to submit questions via the interactive chat feature. We will make every effort to answer all questions submitted.

Philly D.A., is coming to PBS's Independent Lens, on Tuesday, April 20, PBS NC, and on the PBS streaming app. Philly D.A. is an eight-part series, exclusively available on Independent Lens | PBS.
