Webster: Tale of an Outlaw

When Webster the dog arrives at Green Meadows Farm he has already been adopted, mistreated, and given away three times and is done with people, but the other animals of the shelter will not let him give up on the possibility of a special family. For grades 4-7.

The Wind in the Willows

The adventures of Mole, Water Rat, Badger, bumptious Mr. Toad, and other animals who live along the river and in the woods. For grades 4-7.

Bone Head: Story of the Longhorn

Bone Head tells how longhorns once ran wild through the thickets of Texas. Men hunted them just like deer, elk and buffalo. Then, in the 1850s, ranchers began thinking of roping, branding, and driving these creatures to market. If not for these unique animals, we may never have had the American cowboy, trail drives and the Wild West! For grades 4-7.

The Puzzle of the Platypus: And Other Explorations of Science in Action

Discusses eleven challenges for scientists investigating the animal world--finding polar bears' secret dens; studying dolphins' sonar; determining whether the platypus is bird, reptile, or mammal; protecting Mongolian wild horses; and discovering particular characteristics of elephants, crows, rattlesnakes, parrots, and cliff swallows. For grades 4-7. 2008.

Animal Poems

Free verse about twenty-three wildlife creatures--from wasps, cockroaches, hummingbirds, and squirrels, to snakes, snails, whales, and gorillas. "Elephant" conveys the plight of the circus elephant while praising its natural strength. "Star-Nosed Moles" describes a mole's appearance and favorite foods, including "succulent insect-nuggets." For grades 4-7. 2007.

Alec Ramsay has a hard time persuading his partners to retain the girl he hires as a trainer, and an even harder time convincing them to let her race the Black Stallion when Alec is suspended as a jockey. For grades 4-7. 1971.

The World of Animals

Because people often have false impressions of wild animals, the author looks closely at some of the most popular animals, including bears, dolphins, giraffes, wolves, gorillas, and tigers. He gives a realistic account of how these animals live, what they look like, where they sleep, what they eat, how they raise their families, and how many are left in the world. For grades 4-7.

Elephant Secret

Thirteen-year-old Sam and her father scrape by while caring for rescued elephants. When a special baby elephant is delivered at the sanctuary, Sam realizes that a mysterious benefactor has crazy plans for the herd. For grades 4-7. 2018.
