DESCRIPTION
The Collection Development and Metadata Librarian provides leadership in building, managing, and evaluating the Library’s collections to support Johnson C. Smith University’s mission. Working independently, this role oversees the Library’s collection budget, coordinates development policies, and leads strategic planning to align resources with the teaching and research needs of students and faculty. The position advances the vision of the James B. Duke Memorial Library as an innovative hub integrating in-person and digital resources to engage patrons and the community. Responsibilities include overseeing metadata services, cataloging materials, managing OCLC library software, developing workflows, and implementing creative metadata solutions. This librarian contributes to policy and procedure development, collaborates closely with leadership and staff, and ensures collection strategies remain effective and forward-looking. By balancing technical expertise with strategic direction, the position plays a vital role in sustaining a dynamic and accessible library environment. The role reports directly to the Director of Library Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program
3 to 5 years professional experience in an academic library
Experience with cataloging print and electronic resources (such as cataloging, managing subscriptions, resolving access issues)
Experience with an integrated library management system
Experience with RDA and MARC cataloging rules
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience supervising staff and/or student workers
Familiarity with batch editing processes using OCLC or external utility such as MarcEdit
Experience with batch loading and maintenance of vendor catalog records
Experience with EZproxy systems
Advanced expertise with metadata schema such as Dublin Core
SALARY
50,000-55,000 / Annually
