DESCRIPTION
The Collection Development and Metadata Librarian leads the growth, management, and evaluation of the Library’s collections to support Johnson C. Smith University’s mission. Working independently, this position manages the collection budget, coordinates development policies, and advances strategic initiatives aligning resources with academic and research needs. The role is pivotal in enhancing the James B. Duke Memorial Library as a collaborative and innovative hub that integrates digital and in-person resources for student, faculty, and community engagement. Responsibilities include overseeing metadata services, cataloging materials, managing OCLC software, and developing efficient workflows. The Librarian also implements creative metadata strategies, contributes to policy decisions, and collaborates with library leadership and staff to ensure effective, forward-thinking collection strategies. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, this position supports continuous improvement and innovation in collection management, ensuring resources remain responsive to evolving scholarly and technological needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and three to five years of professional academic library experience. Required skills include cataloging print and electronic resources, managing subscriptions, resolving access issues, and using an integrated library system. Familiarity with RDA and MARC cataloging rules is essential. Preferred qualifications include supervisory experience, batch editing using OCLC or MarcEdit, and managing vendor catalog records. Experience with EZproxy systems and advanced knowledge of metadata schema such as Dublin Core are highly desirable. The ideal candidate demonstrates technical expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to improving library access and discovery.
