Description: Norris Public Library seeks an enthusiastic Early Literacy & Youth Services Specialist to lead the library’s outreach and engagement efforts to families in Rutherfordton’s underserved communities, develop and present regular children’s story-times, and promote in person and online the library’s diverse collections of materials for children and teens. The ELYSS will also serve as the library’s representative for national literacy programs such as 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, assisting local families in enrollment; and will spearhead the library’s participation in the Foothills Consortium’s Summer Reading Program. This is a two-year, grant-funded position. The successful candidate will be employed by the Town of Rutherfordton, which offers a comprehensive benefit package. It is possible, but not guaranteed, that this position will be added as a permanent position at the conclusion of the grant period.
Qualifications: Experience working with children and young adults; knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of children and young adults; knowledge of current trends in library services for children and young adults; ability to communicate effectively with others using cultural competence skills; availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
