Women’s History Month, the SLNC Spotlights Dr. Helen G. Edmonds: A Conversation with Dr. Freddie Parker

For Women’s History Month, the SLNC Government and Heritage Library spotlights Dr. Helen G. Edmonds. Dr. Edmonds was the first African American woman to earn a doctoral degree at Ohio State University and the first African American woman to become a graduate school dean in the United States, at North Carolina Central University.

Through her research, Dr. Edmonds was the first scholar to challenge the narrative of the Wilmington Coup of November 1898. She put forth an accurate accounting of the efforts at that time to undermine and limit African American political power.

Join us in conversation with one of Dr. Edmonds’ former students, Dr. Freddie Parker, Professor of History at North Carolina Central University, about her life and her legacy.
