Meet Your Education & Instruction Librarian
Kate Tompkins joined the Government & Heritage Library in May 2023 as the Education & Instruction Librarian. Before moving to North Carolina, Kate was a school librarian for 13 years in St. Augustine, Florida. Kate has a passion for literacy engagement with young people and would love to work with you! If you live in the Raleigh area or are in town visiting, please visit us in person to check out books and more! We are open Tuesday-Friday from 9 am-5 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am-1 pm. If you’re not local, and your public library is a member of the NC Cardinal Library consortium, you can still check out Be Free or Die through our resource sharing service. You can also ask your local library to request it via interlibrary loan. State Fair Ephemera Collection in the North Carolina Digital Collections
Our recently updated North Carolina Digital Collections contains over 90,000 historic and recent photographs, state government publications, manuscripts, and other North Carolina resources from the State Library and the State Archives. The State Fair Ephemera collection contains digitized North Carolina State Fair materials like premium lists, programs, and photographs. With the State Fair coming up in October, what better time to browse our digital collections and give your students a glimpse of what past fairs were like!

It can be tricky for teachers and students alike to find and evaluate the credibility of primary sources online. Our Getting to Primary Sources Research Guide provides you with a variety of resources to walk you through finding primary sources, evaluating them, and using them in the classroom.
